Toby Jones versus . . .

It's a coincidence that Toby Jones has now been in two movies portraying real-life people at about the same time when much more famous actors play that same real-life person.

I'd argue that Jones actually looks more like his real-life characters than the more famous actors. Beyond that I have no particular insight. It's just interesting.

After seeing the trailer, Hopkins seems totally wrong to me as Hitchcock. Way too tall. Both Hitchcock and his wife were rather short. Timothy Spall would have been perfect, but I guess he wouldn't have the star/great actor cachet that Hopkins has.

I don't have any recollection of Hitchcock's height. But Anthony Hopkins certainly doesn't have the roundness I think the role would require. Then again, Sir Anthony is a very good actor.

Timothy Spall would be great as Hitchcock! He very much looks the part. I really enjoyed Spall's turn in the Harry Potter movies as the sniveling rat/man character.

I read a biography of Hitchcock a few years ago. Alma (his wife) is described as "petite". IMDB says Hitchcock was 5'7", so I guess he wasn't that short. About average, but not tall. He always looks short in publicity photos, but that's probably because he's standing around people like Cary Grant (6'2"). Anthony Hopkins is just under 5'9, so I guess he's not that far off height wise.

Spall also played Churchill in The King's Speech. Not quite as good a choice there.
